Glossary of Terms
Below are definitions to various terms used throughout our website.
Individualized Treatment – Every patient unique – as is their injury and condition – this is why RHI invests the necessary time and energy into each individual. Each patient will experience one-on-one treatment with professional therapists and nurses.
Inpatient Care – Inpatient care refers to patients who have suffered a stroke or injury that requires medical stabilization. Patients that require inpatient care will be held at RHI so they can receive the ‘round-the-clock’ care necessary for rehabilitation. An average inpatient stay at RHI lasts between two and three weeks per patient.
Neuropsychology – A discipline that combines psychology and neuroscience to understand the functionality of the brain. If a person comes to RHI after suffering a stroke or brain injury, they will meet with a Neuropsychologist to better understand the type of injury that has been suffered while determining the necessary steps for optimal recovery.
Neuropsychologist – A psychologist that specializes in studying the patterns and behaviors of the brain.
NRC (Neuro Rehab Center) – Located at 9531 Valparaiso Court in Indianapolis, NRC is one of RHI’s three outpatient facilities. The variety of outpatient programs at NRC provide a system in which patients can improve their functioning, establish independence in their community and activities of life, work and recreation. Some of NRC’s outpatient specialties include: Brain Injury Re-entry Program, Vision Program and RHI Wellness Program.
Occupational Therapy – Occupational Therapy is conducted by an Occupational Therapist who helps patients improve their ability to improve performing tasks in living and working environments. In this therapy, patients will improve their motor skills, reasoning abilities and compensate for the loss of previous functionality.
Outpatient Care – If a patient has been discharged from inpatient care, or they’re referred by a physician, that patient will begin outpatient care – which consists of coming to RHI two-to-three times throughout the week for three hours per day to continue their therapy sessions.
RHI Carmel – RHI Carmel is one of RHI’s three outpatient facilities. RHI Carmel specializes in orthopedic, neurological and amputee care, but what makes this location so unique is that we have Chiropractic and Massage Therapists on site available for treatment.
RHI Sports – This program was created to provide an opportunity for people with disabilities to enjoy an active lifestyle. Whether a person is ultra-competitive or just interested in active recreation, RHI Sports Program has something available for everyone.
Spasticity – a disorder in which muscles are continuously contracted. Depending on the severity of the condition, spasticty in muscles and joints can affect a person’s movement, flexibility and speech.
Support Services – Support services are different support groups for people who have suffered different injuries and conditions. These groups are offered to the community. You don’t have to be an RHI patient to participate, nor do you need to register in order to attend.
Vision Therapy – Vision incorporates the cohesiveness between a person’s eyes, brain and body. If this cohesiveness is interrupted due to age, illness, trauma or developmental delay, RHI can provide a therapy that will help improve visual performance.
Wheelchair Seating and Positioning – An outpatient clinic that helps a patient in need of a wheelchair or seat modifications, identify the best seating and positioning products to meet their individual needs.
