Overview

Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana’s comprehensive orthopedic and amputation programs are designed to help individuals reach their highest potential. The program serves joint replacements, trauma injuries, post-surgical clients, back and neck injuries, traumatic and non-traumatic amputations and a variety of other general orthopedic populations. The program includes comprehensive inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, including a comprehensive pain program, functional capacity evaluations and pre-prosthetic/prosthetic training.

Who is part of the Team?

The Interdisciplinary Team that helps you achieve your goals typically involves:

  • You and your support system
  • Physiatrist/Physician/Surgeon
  • Rehabilitation Nursing
  • Physical and Occupational Therapy
  • Case Management

Other specialized medical care is arranged based upon an individual’s needs. Your team may also consist of Speech Therapy, Wound Care Specialists, Dietary, Psychology, Orthotics/Prosthetics, Respiratory, etc.

How are my goals achieved?

Rehabilitation is designed to assist you in achieving your highest potential. You may require assistance in some areas during your healing process, and rehabilitation is designed to help you learn how to instruct others in assisting and to train your family/support system. The team will work with you to set and achieve realistic goals – both initial goals for discharge from inpatient rehabilitation and long-term goals that you have for post-rehabilitation. The ultimate goal is to return to full participation in the community and activities that your did prior to your injury/surgery.

Inpatient Programs:

The inpatient orthopedic and amputee program is for individuals who require intensive rehabilitation services, physician care and 24-hour rehabilitation nursing. Therapy is offered seven days a week, with individuals receiving a minimum of 3 hours of therapy 5 days a week. This therapy is provided through individual therapy sessions as well as group exercise sessions. Group sessions are designed to improve your strength and endurance to allow you to become more independent with your self-care and functional mobility. Your physiatrist and rehabilitation nurses will manage and educate you regarding your medical care and incision/wound care. Your entire team will work with you regarding any orthopedic precautions (for example, joint replacement or weight bearing precautions) to be safe in all of your activities. Additionally, within the amputee program, you will be educated an trained on care of the residual limb including shaping, wrapping and desensitization – all to prepare you for a prosthetic.

The RHI program does not finish in the gym. Rehabilitation nurses provide individualized care around the clock, often continuing what therapy has started in the gym. Nurses focus on education and training to maximize the patient’s readiness for discharge.

Your team will also include a Case Manager that will work with you and the team on your discharge plans. They will assist with you with arranging appropriate outpatient therapies after your discharge from inpatient and to assist in arranging appropriate durable medical equipment (for example, a walker or elevated toilet seat) while you are healing.

Outpatient Programs:

The outpatient orthopedic and amputee therapists will work with you and your physician to design a schedule that will best meet your needs. Typical outpatient intensities are one-hour sessions two – three times a week. Outpatient services are provided at three locations throughout Indianapolis:
