What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis literally means “porous bones.” It is a disease that affects the inside architecture of the bone and is characterized by low bone density. It causes the bone to become weak and fragile leading to an increased risk of fractures. It is a silent disease which often goes undiagnosed until there is a fracture.
Are you at risk for Osteoporosis?
- About 70% of all fractures in people older than 45 are osteoporosis related.
- At least half of all women over the age of 50 have low bone mass and one of two women over age 50 will have an osteoporotic fracture in her remaining lifetime. Most women do not know their bones are thinning.
- One in 8 men will experience an osteoporotic fracture in his lifetime.
