Consider yourself blessed…

Please consider yourself blessed if you are fortunate enough to pass through the doors of RHI. Now...I know that sentence sounds silly. Patients at RHI are often fighting serious battles to regain strength and mobility and independence...so why should they be thought of as blessed? Hopefully, the following story will help explain my statement.

Stan and I first met in August of 1999. We worked together. In January of 2001, our friendship turned into something much more. We both felt incredibly fortunate to have found each other. Our time together was joyous...in spite of the fact that Stan was diagnosed with a recurrent malignant grade 3/grade 4 brain tumor in October of 2001. The statistics were bleak.

Hope was precious to us...giving up simply wasn't an option. To that end, we became engaged (while in Las Vegas!) in September of 2002. Meanwhile, Stan endured one surgery, one gamma knife treatment, and three different chemotherapy regimens...and he was rapidly losing functionality on the left side of his body. Stan was SUCH a fighter. So, we planned our April 5, 2003 wedding knowing that it would take place.

Well, here's where RHI entered the picture. By early 2003, Stan's health was swiftly declining. RHI was kind enough to take us in. For awhile, we wondered if Stan would be strong enough to attend the ceremony. BUT our RHI angels...and I can't possibly begin to name them for fear of leaving out someone...didn't accept that...and so Stan and I were married as planned. [By the way, Stan and I do hold the record (which I hope is never broken) of being the only couple to spend their wedding night at RHI!]

It was a beautiful culmination to what many refer to as a special love story...as Stan peacefully passed away exactly one month later on May 5, 2003. I am eternally grateful to my RHI family. Words truly can't express how much you ALL mean to me. The love and compassion shown by the entire staff is utterly amazing. You enriched my life with your kindness. I consider myself blessed to have been a small part of the fabric of RHI.

Sincerely,
Mindy (Baughman) Peterson
